Big Blue Angel Oak - My First Triptych and Largest Painting to Date

Angel Oak is the most magnificent Oak Tree I’ve ever seen. The oldest living thing this side of the Mississippi, it’s located just outside of Charleston on St. John’s Island. I have wanted to paint her for years, but always felt like the scale needed to be representative of just how majestic this oak tree really is. I finally worked up the nerve, but trying to make sure the washes matched for each board was so tedious. So many hours went into this one but I think the new owners are happy with her. Certainly a conversation piece. Here’s a few photos and a time-lapse video (fancy, I know!) of how it all came together.
